Mimesis is looking for new Content Testers! April 2nd, 2007
As some of you may have noticed, there's been a lack of new content posted to the Mimesis servers due to a lack of available testers. As a result, Project Mimesis is now looking for new people to become Content Testers for beta DLC posted to the server. Testers will be needed primarily for Halo 2 content, however you may be asked to test content for other games if possible. Some of your duties as a tester include:

-Checking the Mimesis forum for new content
-Downloading content and giving initial reactions
-Observing item and weapon placements on maps to determine balance
-Checking for bugs and glitches
-Participating in and helping organize online (XBC and/or XLink Kai) test sessions to check for System Link Compatibility as well as the above mentioned issues
-Giving summarizing feedback about the map and determining if it is appropriate for Mimesis

We're looking for dedicated people who are interested in being a part of the community and contributing to the project. If you think you have what it takes, please read the How to post your application for review thread and then make your application in the Mimesis Content Tester Applications forum!

Mimesis v3 in final beta June 23rd, 2006
The latest in the line of Mimesis revisions, version 3, is in the final stages of beta testing now. We are very pleased with how the re-write has turned out. Almost none of the code from previous Mimesis versions has been used in version 3 and thanks to a lot of very generous projects in the Xbox community, Mimesis now has more features than ever. Team Avalaunch was kind enough to donate some IRC code to get the update feature off of the ground and we learned so much by pouring over the extensive source of open source projects like XBMC and neXgen. As most of you know, Mimesis has been a learning experience for both Ramzi and myself since the beginning, and version 3 is no exception; we learned tons.

Version 3 should be released very soon, given that our beta testers can get all of the testing done and do not find too many bugs. We are also spending some time getting new content online and working to ensure that the new features are taken full advantage of after the release.

Here are a few things to look forward to in the latest version:
CHG: Completely re-written skin engine
CHG: New and improved download queue system
CHG: Game launch feature now works and is configurable
CHG: The storage path is now configurable
CHG: Fixed button sensitivity issues
ADD: Offline content management
ADD: Automatic Mimesis upgrade feature (using irc and ftp)
ADD: Inherit the network settings from your dashboard
ADD: Connection watching thread
ADD: Config setting for writing debug lines to a log file
ADD: Config setting for on-screen debug output
ADD: Managing non Mimesis content
ADD: Support for UDATA packages (ex: gametypes)
ADD: Config setting for which skin to use
ADD: Embedded xbe icon
ADD: Support for the DVD remote
ADD: Server syncing process introduced to lessen load times
ADD: Support for IGR
ADD: Settings screen
ADD: Help screen
ADD: New rendering engine with prompt dialogs
ADD: Filter content by type
Below is a teaser of the new default skin to be released with this version. To see some more preview shots you can visit the screenshots page.

The Forgotten Room (UPDATED) May 24th, 2006
Due to a minor bug that was found after the release of this map, we had to take it down and fix it. The Flying Dutchmen did a great job getting the fix in as quickly as possible. This is a new package, so you will want to disable the old one if you have already downloaded it.

Presenting, The Forgotten Room! May 20th, 2006
This map has an official Bungie-esque feel to it and is definately one of the best conversions to date. Keeping true to the styles Halo 2's creator used on the bsp originally, The Flying Dutchmen, have created a map that does not distract with bells and whistles but instead delivers on an intense multiplayer experience. He did a great job on this mod, grab a copy and play it today!

Update :: Mimesis v3 Progress April 18th, 2006

Well it's been a while since the news here has actually been about Mimesis, the application. So lets change that, shall we?

Click Here to see Mimesis v3 in action.

After a bit of a break from coding, Ramzi and myself have been working furiously on the next version of Mimesis over the past month or so. Its shaping up nicely as a lot of you have seen from the version 3 skin previews posted in the forum. We took some time to rethink the way Mimesis is used, and with much thanks to the users who have given feedback for version 2, we were able to come up with, what we think, is a much easier to use Mimesis. With key additions such as dialog boxes that have buttons for you to make a decision on what to do next to dialog boxes with lists of items to choose from, version 3 is much cleaner and more streamlined. We have given each screen its own identity, and done away with the generic menu that was used on every screen in version 2.

So without further adieu, lets get on with the update!

The Improvements
Since the release of the first version of Mimesis, we have been getting complaints about the incredibly sensitive gamepad buttons. Well I am very happy to announce that this is no more. The controller will feel normal in your hands and no longer will you need to mash the buttons into a fine dust just to go back to the previous screen.

Next on the list was support for all of the controller ports. This seems like a no brainer, but you must remember that we had never written anything before Mimesis. Not just on the Xbox, but anything. So C++ was kicking our ass at the same time that learning this whole new world of Xbox programming was. However, with the past behind us and some experience under our belt, we pressed on and completely rewrote the controller code. Its now not as sensitive and it supports all of the controller ports. It will no longer go crazy on you if you don't have a controller in port one. That was annoying huh?

Moving on down the list of improvements we have IGR (in game restart) support now! Not much to say in depth about this but, yay!

The DVD remote is not yet supported. We'll see how things go...

We have taken a new approach to keeping Mimesis up to date with the latest content in version 3. We set it up to sync with the server on startup (splash screen). It is there that the listing of new supported title's will be downloaded to your Xbox as well as the content listings for each. It will only do this if the server is reporting a newer sync date than your local Xbox. This will cut down on the amount of traffic between the client and the server significantly. It also allowed for a much easier transition into a Mimesis that does not require an internet connection just to manage your content. If the internet is not found on startup then it will prompt you, asking if you would still like to continue using Mimesis. If for whatever reason some of your content listings locally get corrupted or you accidentally deleted some of them... you have a main menu option to manually sync up to the servers.

Choosing content to install will be much more intuitive in version 3. We are doing away with the B button for install and introducing the choice between installing content one MCP at a time or optionally adding it to a que to be installed all at once in batch.

The New Features
New in version 3 is the much anticipated support for game saves and other udata content. This opens the doors to being able to use Mimesis v3 to download gametypes for Halo 2 as well as roster updates for sports games. The possibilities are endless when Mimesis supports both tdata and udata installation.

A new skin engine is being introduced and you will be able to specify one of any number of skins in your skins folder simply by specifying its name in the Mimesis config file.

In version 3 you will have a settings screen that lets you see the network settings as well as all of the other settings you can specify in the config.xml

On the content screen you will have many new features at your fingertips. In one click you will be able to filter the current view from everything for that title, down to just gametypes, or just maps, or anything else that we have supported for that title. The important thing is that its dynamic. Whatever content types are available from the server, are what content types you will be able to filter your view for.

Also from the content screen you will be able to in one click bring up a dialog box to select another title to jump to. It will take you to the content screen of any other title in Mimesis. This will make it faster to jump around Mimesis without having to traverse back up the screen hierarchy.

All auto update management will handled from this content screen as well. With only a couple of clicks through a cascading popup menu you will be able to manage all of your AU installations, backups, restores and deletes.

Content has a new way of being disabled in v3 that will help us move into the future expecting to hit the 50 map limit for Halo 2's main menu. basically the new method will leave the content in the dlc folder but will make it so that the game itself no longer recognizes it as proper dlc. With Halo 2, this will allow you to join a game that is hosting a map that you do not have enabled and still be able to play.

The dialog boxes in version 3 are all new; you have options now! From combo boxes to choose from a list of options to just simple OK error messages. You will feel more at home with more intuitive OS feeling dialogs.

Thats about all I can think of at the moment. All in all I am very pleased with the progress Ramzi and I are making on version 3 and look forward to a release once its all finished. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish thus far, but it would not have been possible without the help of so many in the community. Thanks to all of you!

XBConnect Creates a Mimesis Section March 7th, 2006
Today I got wind of a recent addition to the XBConnect Halo 2 section. After what apears to be numerous requests for a Mimesis section on thier servers, they have finally given Mimesis users thier very own playground. For Halo 2 that is.

I wonder if anyone has mentioned the other games our app supports? Oh ya, and for the record... no, I did not make that icon.

Today you will find a map in your Mimesis available content list that most of us have been waiting to see system link compatible for a long time. Mimesis v2 Beta in testing November 19th, 2005
Thats right, Mimesis v2 is only hours away from release! With the beta in its final stages of testing now, the wait is just about over.

Mimesis v2 will surely meet your content needs with features such as multiple game support, Auto Update Management (backup, restore, delete, and install new), Content Management (enable, disable, install from Mimesis Content Package (mcp)), and the (still in development) game types manager & roster manager for some of your favorite FPS & sports games.

Check back often over the next day or two; this release is coming very soon! Also, don't forget to make your donations, the contest drawing will coincide with the final release of version 2. So don't get caught sniping and miss your chance!

Progress made this weekend :) November 14th, 2005
Thats right, I was actually able to get some work done on Mimesis this weekend and boy did I take advantage of it!

I got a huge amount of code written and the app is shapping up. Like I said in the last update, it is not far from being done... it just needed to be all pulled together and polished. Well I did a lot of that polishing this weekend.

This week I am taking a break from the other things that have been keeping me busy and am going to work on Mimesis only. It is my goal to have it out before the 360, so wish us luck!

We will be doing the iPod drawing 2 days after the release, so time is running out on the contest! Get your donations in for your chance to win a Video iPod or Shuffle.

Mimesis v2 behind schedule November 9th, 2005
Its official, we are going to miss our goal of releasing Mimesis version 2 in time for my 24th birthday on the 10th of Nov. Its too bad that the progress has slowed so much and its all a bit disapointing, but thats the way it goes when lives get in the way. We all became busy as shit and never had the spare time. I for one have been juggling a home remodel (having to sleep away from home a lot) as well as my more than full time job, Ramzi has been swamped with school work, and CLuis is hard at work on other projects.

Version 2 is not far from being complete. In the sense that all of the classes are written for it to function but everything needs to be brought together into a final product. That includes writting the last couple of screens which the UI is already done for.

I am asking that anyone who may be interested in working on it and has the time to do so, contact me on the forums (angrycamel). Serious inquiries only, please (as in you need to know C++ and have experience writting xbox applications). I have even considered making the whole project open source, just to prevent it from dying on the vine per say, but thats up in the air. Like I said, there is not much left to be done, so if you know C++ and want to help out, let me know and I can work with you on getting setup.

Thanks to everyone... and in case your wondering, this does not effect the iPod contest at all. We will still be doing the drawing shortly and two very lucky people will have iPod's!

A makeover and a couple of iPods to boot! October 16th, 2005
Well today is a pretty big day around here!

The new site that angrycamel has been working on for a while now is finally live, so with that comes the official announcement of the upcoming Mimesis v2. We cannot say a definite release date at this point, but we promise it will not be long.

Another HUGE news item is the start of our first contest to raise funds for bandwidth costs of the project. For the next 30 days you will have the opportunity to donate and earn a spot in the drawing for a brand new 30GB iPod Video! Tell your friends, tell everyone, because you will not find a better deal on this hot new handheld anywhere. The highest donation over $25 is guaranteed to win the iPod Shuffle regardless of the main drawing for the iPod Video.

Do we have any Star Wars video game fans out there? It looks like Uber_n00b, from the Mimesis Forums, is on a roll with figuring out the formats of two Star Wars Xbox titles. Let's hope that he can get those mapped out by the time we release v2!

Last but not least, we have started a map mod challenge in the forums that is open to all Halo 2 modders. We challenge you guys to blow our socks off with a completely unbelievable mod to be released on the same day as Mimesis v2! There are a couple very promising mods in the works already, and we are all on the edge of our seats to see what comes of the challenge.

Presenting... Moon Stronghold October 14th, 2005
Well its about time, right?!

New for download from the Mimesis servers is a mod made by none other than, ScottyGee himself. The map is called Moon Stronghold for obvious reason: your on the moon! A tremendous effort was put into making this mod with the quality that comes with the Mimesis name. We hope that you enjoy this release and be sure to thank the author for all of his hard work.

The Covenant discovered a liquid energy under the Moon surface. Infiltrate the Moon Base and get control of it before they do.

Mimesis v2.0 Progress Report October 2nd, 2005
Hello all, it's been a while since you have heard from us devs, and I know that your getting a little anxious about not having anything new to download, but hang in there, stuff is in the works. To make my point we have put together a little clip of the, higly anticipated, Mimesis v2.0 in action! You can check it out here or by clicking the preview image below.

Before you flood the forums with questions... no there is no real Halo version 3, 4 or 5. Its merely sample junk that used for testing. Enjoy the video, because there is more where that came from.

Mimesis featured on the G4 gaming channel! September 22nd, 2005
The G4 gaming channel has done a segment on our app recently showing clips of all three of the currently available maps as well as capped video of it running and installing the downloaded maps.

This is our first bit of national media attention and I must say, its a little exciting. When I first saw the clip, I ran around the office gathering people around my desk to show it off. Some looked confused, some laughed and some asked for me to email them the link because they have Halo 2 as well! I am such a dork.

In case you haven't already, Click here to watch the segment.

I hope that its ok to post a cap of the show... (G4 people, let me know if not and I will remove it)

ProjectMimesis.com gets a new home! September 13th, 2005
If you can see this then your DNS has updated to point to the new projectmimesis.com! Its faster than before and will not have the downtimes that the last server had.

Our new server is equipped with top of the line hardware:

* Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz processors (nearly 5 GHz of processing power total!)
* 200 gigs of hardware RAID 1
* general improved quality of all server components

You should deffinately see a difference in the load times of each page as well as the download speed of the Mimesis content packages (unless you hit a different mirror). Everything should generally feel a bit more snappy.

Enjoy!
